"The pity of war"
What a prompt.
I suppose you want sandy soldiers,
Abandoned, blasted humvees, and
Rusting rifles, hmm?
The sorrow of the volunteer
Who threw his life away.
Do not pity soldiers.
Do not mourn.
They were not dragged or beaten
Or drafted to fight.
They would not know
Ultimate sacrifice
If it held them close on a holiday,
And begged them to stay
(Just please, please)
One more day.
The pity of war is not
That youth should die,
But that
It should die so indifferently.
This is not war as of old:
Man against man.
It is man against mother.
Man against child.
Pride against helpless love.
Oh! How much easier it is to leave
Than to be left.
Next time you cry for the wasted dead
Ask yourself,
"Who lost
The Lost Generation?"
Congrats!
Congratulations for your second place finish.
